The Basenji is an unusual breed in that he physically cannot
bark. He is playful and energetic and needs daily exercise
to avoid boredom chewing. Since he is an escape artist and
extremely fast, only let him off leash in a safe enclosed
area. He is clever and stubborn, but responds well to obedience
training. He can be wary of strangers and other dogs.
Physical Features and Grooming
Basenjis are small, about 16 inches tall and weighing 20-25
pounds. He has a short, soft, smooth coat. He needs brushing
once a week. He is usually black, black-and-tan, chestnut
or brindle. His ears stand up.
Health Issues
Basenjis are prone to kidney disorders, eye problems and
hernias.
