The Australian Shepherd is a very energetic dog that needs
lots of exercise. He does best with an owner who will enjoy
exercising and playing games and other activities with his
Aussie. Without enough exercise he may be prone to chewing
or other destructive behavior. He is good with children and
generally gets along with other dogs. He has a strong herding
instinct and may try to "herd you" by nipping at
your heels.
Physical Features:
Aussies are 18 to 23 inches (females at the shorter end of
the spectrum). He has a medium length coat and can be a variety
of colors from a mottled blue-gray-black to a freckled red
or black. He may have a straight coat or a wavy coat and longer
hair on his stomach, legs, neck and chest. He should be brushed
twice weekly. His ears fold forward and his tail can either
be a natural bobtail or it can be docked.
Health Issues
Australian Shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia, cataracts,
deafness and PRA.
