The American Staffordshire Terrier is a courageous, protective
dog that makes a good home guardian and companion. He is usually
quiet and confident. He is ok with strangers when his owner
is present. He should not be allowed off-leash unless in an
enclosed, safe area because he can be aggressive with other
animals. He needs lots of socialization and training and it
is important that family members establish leadership over
him. The AmStaff is not to be confused with the American Pit
Bull Terrier, which was bred for aggressiveness.
Physical Features:
The AmStaff is muscular, stocky and strong. He is 17-19 inches
tall and weighs 50-80 pounds. He has a stiff, short coat and
only requires a little brushing once a week. He may be black,
brindle, fawn, or a patchwork of colors.
Health Issues
American Staffordshire Terriers are susceptible to hip dysplasia.
