The Akita is large, powerful, protective and strong willed.
He is also dignified and courageous. He can be aggressive
toward other dogs. He will require early socialization and
extensive and firm obedience training. It is important for
family members to establish leadership over him early on.
With daily exercise he will adapt well to city life.
Physical Features and Grooming:
The Akita stands 24-28 inches and weigh 75-110 pounds. He
has a harsh, thick, medium length coat and dense undercoat
that needs brushing once a week. He has a broad head, deep
muzzle, small eyes and long curling tail. His coat may be
fawn, brindle, pinto or white. Many, except the white, have
a mask or blaze on the face
Health Issues
Akitas are prone to hip dysplasia, thyroid problems, PRA
and bad knees.
